“My name is Jared. I found out I had sleep apnea probably a couple years back. It was really noticed from my girlfriend. She started waking me up, telling me I wasn’t breathing, telling me I was snoring really, really loud. That was like the main thing. I’ve been snoring for a while, my whole life, but I guess it just got worse and the stopping the breathing–the breathing stopping in the middle of the night, waking her up is when I really noticed I had to do something about it. So, she told me, “Go to a doctor and check it out.” I went to Dr. Anand. He pointed me in the right direction, did a sleep study. After the sleep study, we found I had a really bad case of sleep apnea ‘cause of my build. My athletic build is a lot bigger. It’s more of a bodybuilder, powerlifter, football-player body, and knowing that I have all that muscle pressing down on my chest and throat, it’s like obvious it was stopping my breathing in the middle of the night. So, went through. Dr. Anand suggested surgery because I couldn’t deal with doing the mask at night. I just couldn’t sleep with it. It wasn’t comfortable for me. I know it’s successful with a lot of people, but not with me. I just didn’t feel comfortable with it at night, felt like I was fighting with the breathing machine itself, so the surgery itself actually helped me out, and after the surgery, you know, recovery and everything, I feel a lot better, a lot more energy, a lot, a lot more ability to do more things throughout the day because I’m not feeling tired and wanting to just go relax at home anymore after my workouts either. I’m getting a lot more done. Actually, my workouts, my lifts have all gone up. My strength has been going through the roof because I guess I get more sleep now. I have more recovery time for my body to recover, so this surgery itself was definitely a life-saving surgery and life-changing surgery. If I were to give any advice for anybody, I’m 30 years old, not that old, and I’m, you know, still pretty young, very active, but it’s a procedure that should be done. Anybody should look into it. Anybody should get tested. Go do the snoring tests or get evaluated at least. Get evaluated first, and it’s definitely a life-changing experience. It’ll help you out in the long run.”
