Dupixent® Injection Therapy Reduces Nasal Polyps.

GNO Snoring and Sinus, the New Orleans area experts in office-based treatments for sleep apnea and sinusitis, has added a novel therapy to its armamentarium of treatment options for patients suffering from Chronic Sinusitis with Nasal Polyps (CRSwNP).

Dupixent® (dupilumab) is an FDA-approved biologic injection medication that acts as an inhibitor of interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-13 (IL-13), which are key drivers in the inflammatory response that causes nasal polyps to develop.

CRSwNP is a chronic disease of the upper airway that obstructs the sinuses and nasal passages. It can lead to breathing difficulties, nasal congestion and discharge, reduced or loss of sense of smell and taste, and facial pressure. CRSwNP can be debilitating, with many patients opting for systemic steroids or nasal surgery, which often cannot control this disease.

“Prior to the arrival of Dupixent®, our patients with nasal polyps had few effective options at full disease modification,” said Akash Anand, MD of GNO Snoring and Sinus. “High dose steroids were the most effective, given their anti-inflammatory properties, but the long-term usage of those medications is not ideal. Also, many patients required multiple surgeries to debulk their polyp burden. Unfortunately, those patients often have polyp recurrence after a few months or years. After incorporating Dupixent® into our treatment protocol for patients with nasal polyps, the results have been dramatic. The polyps seem to ‘melt away’ and patients have had such a favorable response to treatment that we discuss it with every patient with nasal polyps.”

Dupixent® therapy is currently approved by various insurance companies provided patients have clinical evidence of Chronic Sinusitis with Nasal Polyps, evidence of disease on nasal endoscopy or CT scan of the sinuses, and the patient has been unable to obtain relief of polyps despite various medications and/or surgery.
